Mayor Tiwari Announces Temporary Step Aside

Maribyrnong Mayor Pradeep Tiwari has confirmed he will temporarily stand down from his mayoral responsibilities while a court matter is underway. The decision comes after media coverage regarding allegations of a dangerous driving incident.

Mayor Tiwari clarified that the allegations are completely unrelated to his council work and to his service as Mayor. He said that, on legal advice, he cannot comment further but is working closely with his lawyers to resolve the matter quickly.

Support From the Community

Since the news broke, Cr Tiwari has received a wave of encouragement from residents and supporters across the community. He expressed his gratitude for the “hundreds of messages, calls, and emails,” saying the backing of the community means a great deal during this challenging time.

Condemning Racist Commentary

The Mayor also addressed the racist abuse that has circulated online since the media reports, particularly attacks targeting his Indian heritage.

He described the comments as “hurtful and unacceptable,” adding that mocking an entire community because of one individual case is deeply unfair. Mayor Tiwari stressed that racism has no place in Maribyrnong or anywhere in Australia and pledged to continue speaking out against it.

Deputy Mayor to Act in His Place

During his absence, Deputy Mayor Cr Bernadette Thomas will fulfil the responsibilities of Acting Mayor. Mayor Tiwari emphasised that this transition follows standard council procedure and assured the community that no essential projects or services will be disrupted.

Commitment to Return

Although stepping aside for now, Cr Tiwari confirmed he will remain a councilor for the City of Maribyrnong. Once the legal proceedings are finalised, he intends to resume his mayoral duties and continue delivering on projects for residents.

“There is still a lot of important work ahead for our city, and I remain dedicated to achieving it. I will return after this short break,” he said.
